How to Spend a Saturday in Altus

As a small town, it can be tough to find Altus’ hidden gems at first. But there are more options than you might think! Whether you’re looking for fun things to do with your family or you’re spending time with new friends, Saturday in Altus has a ton to offer.

The first stop for any great morning is great coffee, right? Whether you like it sweet or black, coffee or tea, hot or frozen, swing by White Buffalo Coffee Bar for your morning caffeine.

Get it to go, because the next stop is the Downtown Market! Held once a month on Saturday mornings, local artists and farmers set up booths to sell their creations. I usually pick up some local honey and whatever vegetables I’m in the mood for, and it’s a great place to run into friends.

If you want to continue the shopping, walk a few blocks over to the town square to explore the shops. There are several antique stores full of vintage finds and local crafts. My favorite is Abby Lane for crafts and restored furniture, while Dora Lou’s is an antique haven. If old stuff isn’t your thing, try the Enchanted Door for everything from elegant lamps to baby gifts.

I  can’t help buying something adorable every time I look.

Who’s hungry for lunch? If I’m out and about, my favorite lunch spot is Altus Donuts and Fried Rice. It’s an unorthodox pairing for sure, but they sell the best Pad Thai I’ve found in Oklahoma! I dare you to order at the counter without buying a donut too. One tray can easily feed two people, or perfect for leftovers later!

Once you’ve fueled up, go hiking! One of the best parts of the area is being outside. My favorite place to hike is the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, with trails at every skill level and length. Another great option is Quartz Mountain, which offers short hikes, camping, and lake access.

Hiking not your thing, but still want to get outside? A hidden gem of Altus AFB is the walking trail around the golf course. Even if golf isn’t your thing, it’s a beautiful way to spend an hour or two.  The 5k loop is easy to pick up at Charlie’s or near base housing. I do this trail at least three times a week, with friends or my dog as a way to get some exercise or soak in some sunshine.

For dinner, head over to my favorite restaurant in Altus: Taqueria Hernandez. It’s a popular lunch spot and can get crowded fast, but it’s easier to get a table for dinner. It’s the type of place where you don’t have to order off the menu – just tell your waiter what you want on your tacos, and you’re good to go! My favorite combination is a barbacoa taco and a shrimp tostada (essentially shrimp, avocado, and cilantro on top of a crispy tortilla).

These are my favorite ways to spend a Saturday in Altus. What are your go-to Saturday activities?
