5 Ways to Experience the Local Side of Altus

5 Ways to Experience the Local Side of Altus

Small town life means sometimes we have to work a little harder to find the fun a city when visiting on TDY. So today we’re making it easy for you by sharing five ways to experience the local side of Altus!

Eat somewhere local

Altus’ food forte is great greasy spoons, especially at breakfast. My favorite is Sunrise Cafe, but it’s only open weekdays. Try the pile up – a  delicious mess of sausage, eggs, cheese, and gravy over biscuits!  If you’re looking for breakfast on the weekend, head to Araceli’s. They’ve got an extensive breakfast and lunch menu, with great omelets especially!

Breakfast not your thing? Get great Mexican food at Taqueria Hernandez – it’s my favorite restaurant in town and we eat there weekly! The tacos are customizable with just about any

Attend an Altus High School football game

High school football may not seem a little unorthodox, but it’s the best way to spend those fall Friday nights! Most of the town shows up and the team is pretty good – they’ve made it to states most of the past few years. So grab some hot chocolate and get your school spirit on!

Go see the chicks at Atwoods

If you watched Parks and Recreation, Atwoods is the real-life version of Food & Stuff. For those of us that didn’t grow up in small agrarian towns, Atwoods is a thing of beauty. In one store, you can buy cowboy boots, camping equipment, fence building supplies, power tools, and basic food. Oh, and there are live chicks for sale in the back. Every time I stop in for lightbulbs, I check on their cuteness.

Taste test all the donut restaurants

Altus hosts three donut places, each with slightly different offerings. So one morning, grab a few from each spot and do a taste test! Our results: Ye Olde Donut Shoppe has the best glazed, Happy Donuts has the best variety, and Donuts and Fried Rice has the best… pad Thai. (Weird combination but trust me, it’s delicious!)

Check out the local events

From the Rockin Rumble (a car show) to the Rattlesnake Round-Up (a regional fair with rattlesnakes on display, for lack of a better explanation). You can get a full rundown of local Altus events here**!

These are just a few ways to experience local life in Altus. These are especially good if you’ve got family visiting too!  What are the things you look for in exploring a town on TDY?
