Wine has been produced in Virginia since the early days of European colonization in the 17th century. But Virginia’s hot and humid summers can be challenging to viticulture which is why only within the last 20 years the industry has developed past the novelty status. And now Virginia is the second largest wine producer by volume in the South.
One of the best parts about the wineries in Northern Virginia is the wine is only one piece of what makes each winery special and worth visiting. So come for the wine, but stay for a picnic, the music, the atmosphere or whatever draws you in.
Bull Run Winery, Manassas, VA
Travel back in time at this scenic working farm vineyard in an authentic 1860s setting. Conveniently located two miles off of I-66 and less than an hour from Washington DC, the Winery at Bull Run adjoins over 5,000 countryside acres of the historical Manassas Nation Battlefield Park providing you with great views and a piece of history.
There are two lawn sections, one section for those over 21, and one for families. Even on busy days there is plenty of room for people to have a picnic. Outside food is allowed on the lawn area, and inside the tasting room there is food available for purchase. Wine tastings are offered and a favorite is the Cannonball Hard Cider.

Stone Tower Winery, Leesburg, VA
Inside the Harvest Barn you will find a family friendly Tasting Room. You can enjoy a tasting at one of their five bars on the lower level or hang out and enjoy a glass upstairs under a beautiful vaulted ceiling. The spacious terrace and front lawn are the perfect spots for a picnic.
Guest 21 and older are welcome to join in the stunning Tower View Tasting Room. Enjoy a tasting from the main bar or purchase a glass or bottle to enjoy from the Marketplace.
Bluemont Vineyard, Bluemont, VA
Bluemont Vineyard is known for its amazing views and wine flights. Located on the first ridge of the Blue Ridge Mountains their tasting room is 951 feet above sea level with panoramic views of Loudon Valley. In the tasting room, you can have a guided tasting, flights to enjoy at your leisure, and wines for purchase by the bottle. There are also seasonal sangria and a food menu. Outside food is not allowed.
868 Estate Vineyards, Hillsboro, VA
This vineyard is conveniently located on Harper’s Ferry Rd on the Loudon Country Wine Trail only 75 mins from DC. It is a welcoming vineyard with award-winning wine. This vineyard is family friendly and open to well-behaved dogs on leashes. No outside food is allowed in the Tasting Room or Pavilion. They have plenty of food options on site including a gourmet fare in their full-service restaurant. The tasting room offers tastings, wine by the glass or bottle for purchase.
